Somebody once asked me. ‘How much do you love me?'
I said, ‘This much,'
And stretched out my arms as far as they would go.
'Is that all?' they said.
So I stretched further, expanding my chest and reaching as far as I could.
But still this wasn't enough for them.
Once again I stretched,
This time so far back that my knuckles met behind me.
At this point my skin began to split,
My ribs began to crack,
My chest tore open,

My heart burst out
And fell to the floor.
We both looked at it as it became cooler and cooler
And more still and more still
Until finally it was cold and dead.
Then a crowd of strangers appeared
And one by one they approached.
But because they didn't recognise my heart
They trampled over the it.
I have learnt from this
Never to show somebody how much I love them.

Una vegada qualcú em va demanar: “Com m'estimes de molt?”.
Jo vaig dir: “Així”,
i vaig obrir els braços tant com vaig poder.
“Tan poc?”, em va dir.
Així que vaig obrir encara més els braços, tibant el pit
per abraçar l'espai més gran que podia.
Però encara no ho va trobar prou.
Així que vaig obrir encara més els braços,
tant que els nusos dels dits es tocaren per darrere.
En aquell moment la pell se’m començà a esqueixar,
les costelles començaren a trencar-se’m,
el pit se'm va badar,
el cor em va sortir disparat
i va caure en terra.
Tots dos el miràrem que s'anava refredant cada vegada més
i que cada vegada més s'anava quedant quiet,
fins que, finalment, va ser fred i mort.
Aleshores, una multitud d'estranys va comparèixer
i d'un en un s'anaren acostant.
Però, com que no reconeixien el meu cor,
el trepitjaren.
D'aquesta manera vaig aprendre
a no mostrar pus mai a ningú com l'estim de molt.
